I took this photo early on a sunny Sunday morning
in early January. It was a magical morning, no one around and so peaceful you could hear a pin drop. I looked at the pier which was radiating in the sun. I shut my eyes and pictured it in my mind just as I had seen it in an old photograph. Suddenly, I could smell and hear the horse drawn cabs, waiting at the entrance to pick up the passengers. I could hear people laughing and chatting and the sound of footsteps clunking in rhythm as they walked the boards, and the squeaking wheels of a sack truck of some porter transporting someone's trunk. Then I heard the the whistle blow on the steamer and it all faded away.
I know you think I'm a dreamer, but try it yourself some time and maybe you will see, or hear, the ghosts of Birnbeck pier.
